Nutrition and Health

Health and nutrition is a big part of living the organic
life. By choosing the natural goodness of organic
food you’re already taking a big step to
safeguarding your family’s health, but what
more can you do?

Get ready to cook!

Cooking from scratch may take a little more time and effort than serving up processed foods but will provide many more benefits in terms of improving your diet, tantalising your taste buds not to mention saving you money!

Healthy cooking starts with simple ingredients; lots of fruit and vegetables, with complex and unrefined carbohydrates such as brown rice, wholemeal pasta and beans. You should also include plenty of fish and vegetable sources of protein such as nuts, seeds and lentils. Although only moderate amounts of meat and dairy are recommended, they are also vital to a healthy diet. Where possible try to choose organic, fresh, seasonal produce. If you base your diet around unprocessed foods your body is able to stock up on vital nutrients required for optimum health whilst reducing your intake of additives, and artificial flavours and colours found in some processed foods.

Remember healthy cooking is also an opportunity to expand the content of your diet to include foods that you don’t normally eat. This serves as a good example for your children to follow and gets them accustomed to different tastes. Similarly involving your children in the preparation and cooking of food teaches them valuable life skills and encourages them to develop healthy food habits.

Get active

Healthy eating is only half the story, when it comes to the secrets of staying healthy the other half is exercise. Exercise is a fun way to spend time together and can help you and your family stay fit and healthy, boost self-image and provide a welcome break from the stress of modern day life. There are endless activities you and your family can do together; from a walk in the woods to cycling in the park to swimming at the local leisure centre. Or why not try an activity holiday such as walking / hiking, horse riding or skiing?
