Why Organic?

There are so many choices you can make when you go to the shops these days. So why should you choose organic? Well, there are lots of reasons to go organic ranging from wanting to avoid chemicals & pesticides; to showing your support for smaller farmers and helping the environment.

To help you understand the benefits of making the
organic choice, we've set out a few of the most
important ones right here.

Why Buy Organic?

Making the choice to buy organic products can send a powerful message about what you believe in and what you’re doing about it.

  • Chemicals – choosing organic means you’re avoiding harmful pesticides and other toxins in you and your family’s diet.
  • Saving energy – farmers who use natural fertilisers use far less energy than those who use manufactured, chemical fertilisers.
  • Helping small farmers – buying organic supports small family farmers who make up most of the organic producers.
  • The environment – organic food helps to prevent such environmental problems as water being polluted with pesticides and soil erosion.
  • The true cost – conventional farming may seem cheaper than organic now, but what about the long-term costs of environmental clean-up?

Why Eat Organic?

Buying organic is a big way to support the issues you believe in, but why should you decide to 'eat' organic? Here are just a few of the reasons for adopting an organic diet.

  • Safety – untouched by chemicals and manufactured fertilisers, there’s a certain peace of mind that comes from eating organic.
  • Energy saving – organic foods help reduce dependence on unsustainable resources.
  • The ‘modern’ and the ‘traditional’ – a modern understanding of soil and ecology combines with traditional crop rotation methods to provide natural pest control.
  • BSE free – since 1985 there has not been a single case of BSE reported in any fully organically managed herd of cattle.
  • Production – organic food does not use genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or growth promoting drugs at any stage of its production and there is minimal use
    of antibiotics.
